Thank you for your help today on the phone.

I wanted to explain a bit more about the volunteer snorkeling opportunity we discussed, as I think your customers and dive club members may be interested.

The Pacific Rivers Council is a non-profit river conservation organization that is working to conserve and restore the Umpqua River. http://pacificrivers.org/

One of our projects in the Umpqua is the Volunteer Monitoring Program, in which we train local citizens to do snorkel counts of adult summer steelhead, and juvenile salmonids. We are having a training session this Wed, August 10th for people that are interested in participating in a watershed wide salmonid survey in Canton Creek. We are going to meet at the turnoff to Steamboat Creek off of the North Umpqua Highway 138 at 9:00am. From there we will drive up Canton Creek and have our training session in the river. If you have a wetsuit and snorkel mask, please bring them, if you do not have a wet suit or mask, I have a limited number of them for people that are interested in borrowing one. Please bring water, lunch, snacks, sunscreen, a towel, a notebook and pencil to jot down notes, and a pair of wading boots or wading sandals and a pair of neoprene gloves, or work gloves. We will be out most of the day. The actual survey will take place during the second week of September.

If you are interested in attending these sessions or have any questions for me, please e-mail me back as soon as possible. If this date does not work for you, but you are still interested in attending a training session, let me know and I may be able to schedule a second training date.

If you know of anyone else that may be interested in volunteering, please feel free to forward this e-mail to them.

Hey all you friendly divers!

We will be going to Grand Turk island May14 --21 2011. We will fill up fast as always so please don't wait to long to call me and get your names on the list. We are taking 16 people this year. I already have 5 and that means 10 spots left.

We will not be handling the air fair from Portland to Providenciales "PROVO": But the flight from Provo to Grand Turk is included in the pkg price. This will help some people use their air miles and they can plan their own flights. I will fly out May 13th.

The resort is called Bohio Dive resort. Lots of places to eat and some dancing locations also, so don't miss out on all the fun. Remember don't wait.

Mike from Diver's Den is scheduling an Advanced Class - December 10th,11th, and 12th - Hood Canal - Hoodsport Washington.

Also he is finalizing a Tropical Trip for May 14 Thur 21 ( 2011). He is looking at Grand Turk Island.

Cable Crossing is around an 45 minutes from Roseburg; If I remember correctly.

Diver's Den Fiji Dive Trip March 2009

We made it back from Fiji.

This was just one of the beautiful mornings we woke up to in Fiji.

We had a wonderful time. Weather was perfect and the water was a toasty 86 degrees.

Diver's Den Dive Shop - Moving to new location

The Divers Den will be opening February 23 in a new location at 2333 NE Diamond Lake Blvd. This new location will be in the same complex as All That Video.

After 12 years down town on Main street, I decided that this move would be a good move for the Divers Den and would provide better parking and access for Divers and Snorkelers.

Along with Scuba Diving Lessons, we provide diving trips and vacations for groups.

This year the Divers Den Dive Club will be starting a kids club. We are looking forward to the new addition of kids and the excitement they bring to diving. We have always been a family oriented shop and welcome the whole family to learn about diving and snorkeling.

The club meets the fourth Wednesday of every month at Little Brothers Pub. All ages are welcome as the pub is a family restaurant.

The Dive club meeting for Diver's Den is canceled for both November and December.

With the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays approaching, Mike from Diver's Den has made the executive decision to cancel these two meetings.

Most people are so busy at this time of year, do find it difficult to attend the dive club meetings held in November and December.

The time is now to get out there and do some diving on the coast, before the weather changes. Look for the days that we have an off-shore flow. This will flatten out the waves and the next few days should be great.

Hey Everyone!

Dive meeting soon upon us!

September 24, 2008 @ 7:00 pm "Murphy's House of Brew's"

Hope you all have had a great dive summer! Seems like our summer has gone by so fast. But we seem to always have great October dive days left. Maybe cool mornings but by the afternoon it warms up with our beautiful Oregon sunshine.

Dave's Dad is having a knee replacement on Tuesday so I am not quite sure if we will be able to make it to the meeting. We missed the last one because of other commitments.

Maybe we all could get together and have a "Brown Bag" and Snorkel Day at Amacher Park on Sunday - September 28, 2008. ( what do you think?) Maybe try for the time frame that cooperates will all of us around 1:00pm. If you have church on that day you can make it after your service.

Just bring your food, mask, fins, snorkel, and I always get cold, so I wear my 5 ml wetsuit and gloves and usually my tropical hood.
I hate being cold.

Dave and I will probably get there a bit earlier. We all are always hungry ( Am I right!) heheh. So if some of you want to get there earlier and some close to start of the meeting and some right on time. Then maybe we won't have to wait so long for our food.

Maybe spacing our arrival might just work for our food getting to us promptly.

Who's going to Mendocino in August? Camp sites fill up fast and also I would assume that motels are quite busy as well. Have you contacted Mike if so.

Fiji ( March 2009 ) Coming soon! - Can't wait for this dive trip! It's going to be so much fun at such a beautiful location. Don't forget to set aside your hard earned cash for this one. If I remember correctly, I think balance due on this trip is * December 15, 2008.

Prayers for Reilly!

Mike's daughter Reilly is due for her surgery tomorrow, June 17th @11:00 am up at Dornbecker Hospital in Portland. Mike is up there this week, so let's get all the prayers out for her and Godspeed for her recovery. She truly is an adorable little girl.

Mendocino Trip - August 2008

Hey Everyone!

Thanks for coming to the Diver's Den Dive Club meeting tonight. Nice to see all of you and to enjoy the good food there at Murphy's House of Brews.

This is the site for the Mendocino trip ( Russian Gulch State Park) that Mike briefed us on.

This trip is tentatively looking to be around late summer, August 2008.

This trip you can choose to scuba dive as well as free dive for abalone, so bring all your scuba gear.

One day choose to do free dive for abalone, next day maybe scuba. What ever tickles your fancy!!!

Mike I think he looking to spend 3 or 4 days, everyone will probably most likely be on their own time frame.

Fiji Fun : Update from Diver's Den

I would like to ask all of you to put in a special prayer for Mike and Angie's daughter, Reilly.

Reilly has been at the Dornbecker Hospital up in Portland off and on now for the last couple of months.
As some of you are aware; the Dive Shop has been open and closed off and on for a while now due to Mike's time spent with his daughter at the hospital.

Prayers are very much in need for her recovery and to get her back home.

Hey everyone Jim asked me to post this

At our August 23rd meeting of douglas county dive club members we decided to have a potluck/shrimp fry on Wed. Sept 5th. at 6p.m. at James Wood boat landing on the main Umpqua--This is 7 miles west of the Umpua store on the north side of the river (call Jim R. at 6724022 with questions or for directions) this dive side has a deep area 40 to 50 ft. and is also great for snorkling.
What should I bring? dive or swimming gear-a delectable side dish-beverage of choice-folding chair.
What is the club providing? hot dogs-condiments-corn on the cob- garlic shrimp(cooked to perfection)-paper plates/utensils-and a reason to blow town and have a great time!
I'm hoping with enough advance notice you will be able to attend. Jim

The Graffiti BBQ was terrific. Talk about good food. Wow! Thank you all for the great fixins. Ymmm!

Just wanted to thank Jim, Linda, Jerry, Virginia, Taylor, Rod and Melissa for setting up and cleaning up the after the festivity. I know it takes a bit of time and appreciate all that you have done for the club. I would of liked to help this year but as some of you know Dave and I have been busy with his Dad these last couple of weeks. He is doing better now.

Virginia, tell your Mom thanks so much for bringing her dishes to our BBQ. The potato salad and desserts were excellent. I was so happy that someone brought a homemade potato salad. I know it takes a while to put that together. Oh yes, her molasses cookies ( oh my my ) those were scrumptious. Oh Yes, and the snicker doodles.

Thank you all for coming to the Douglas County Dive Club meeting last night. It turned out to be a great one. Sorry some of you could not make it.

Jim, as always you lead the group with such enthusiasm. You and Linda always come with such an interesting box of door prizes. I won a yellow ducky. Thanks! Maybe I can use it in the bath. ( hee, hee ) Richard won a few door prizes ( hope you enjoy them) don't let Terry have the tasty one. Oh yes I remember she only likes the yellow ones. Hmmmm!

Jim addressed the group about our blog site. He suggested that we use it a little more often. It really can be a time saver and it can update everyone on up coming dive trips and gives you the opportunity to coordinate dives, with group or just with you and a few divers.. This will make is easier on everyone, and allowing you to comment and make your planned dive trips and that way everyone is updated on who's doing what and when.

Phone calls really take up alot more time on all of us to coordinate dive trips. When you have access to the Internet, you can be planning on line at whatever time of day or night you want.

Mike from Diver's Den has a Scuba Class starting on Monday - March 26, 2007 for Beginning Open Water.

He also is scheduling for and Advanced Class. If any of you would like to sign up for the Advanced Class, please call Diver's Den #673-3710.

Thank you all for coming last night to the Douglas County Dive Club meeting. To all of you who did not make it to the meeting, ( too bad - we ate your cookies.)

We all had a great time.

Jim, just wanted to thank you and Linda for all you do in purchasing all the door prizes. You really come up with some fun items. I like the hat I won, but I think Dave likes it better. In fact I think he stole it from me. (hmmmm!)

We have decided to cancel the November meeting. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Our next dive club meeting will not be until December 28, 2006 .

On December 16, 2006 the Douglas County Dive club has decided to attend the Christmas show at Seven Feathers @ 9:00 pm and then the dance floor opens up after that. And of course we all have to stay and dance the night away.

I have 25 reserved spots open. If any of you want to go, please email soon.

Altitude Class - August 19, 2006

Morrie Lloyd is scheduling an Altitude Class set for August 19, 2006.

It will be at Clear Lake.

Clear Lake is the headwaters of the beautiful McKenzie River. The lake was formed about 3000 years ago when the Little Nash Crater erupted. The lava flow and volcanic ash from the eruption dammed the river that flowed through the valley. The forest that was in the valley still stands in the lake and can be seen through the crystal clear water to depths of over a hundred feet.

This is truly a beautiful dive!

If any of you are interested in signing up for this Altitude Class, please contact Morrie by August 14, 2006. This allows him to schedule with all of you in a timely manner and allows Mike at Diver's Den to have your tanks filled and equipment rentals on hand for all of you who might need to rent.

Fun @ Hoodsport April 8th, 9th, 10th

Just wanted to blog a line or two about the Hoodsport Dive over the weekend.

Mike from Diver's Den held an Advanced Class in Hoodsport over this past weekend.

He had some great students who did exceptionally well on their dives. The viz was about 35ft. and the weather held on great. Just a few sprinkles and the rest of the weekend was beautiful.

Jim, Jerry, Virginia and myself went up also. We all had a wonderful time.

This one particular dive got my little heart just beating a little bit fast ( well I am a weeny sometimes, I have to be, nobody else wants to do it, so... ) Mike decides at the base of the Wolf Eels den to get a living crab and try to feed the Wolf Eel. Well the lights are shining brightly on this poor little thing, yeah blind him that will do it, its legs just go every which way trying to free itself from Mikes hands while Mike is trying to place the poor thing in the home of the Wolf eel. Gee now that's not right ( hee, hee ) anyway; To me, it looked like this footage should of been in a horror film. Maybe Mike should put one together, (Not). I thought OK lets end this one and go on to something else.

Jim Rogers however got some really cool footage of Mike feeding the Wolf Eel and the jaw force on these eels are incredible. It just snapped that crab like it was eating a cupcake. OOH!
I suppose that Jim might bring some of his footage at the next club meeting.

Well enough for now, see all of you when the group gets back from Little Cayman come a couple of weeks from now.

Club Meeting

March 23, 2006 was the Douglas County Diver's Club Meeting.

Once again, thank all of you for coming. We had quite a turn out, "Again".

Rod Smith our President of the club addresses the club and gets the meeting started.

Most often, everyone around the room introduces themselves and fills the group in on how long they have been diving, and their most recent dives. We then venture into play time at least for a while, before seriousness sets in.

Jim Rogers always has some activity going on for the meeting! His theme for the meeting this time was centered around "Bunnies", that is, Easter Bunny prizes.

The children of the group seemed to take most of the prizes this time. Seemed to be appropriate with the prizes centered around an Easter theme. However, I think Jerry really wanted to at least win one prize! ( hee, hee) Well Jerry, maybe next time.

Kathryn won herself some "Pink Bunny Ears"; Really adorable looking on her! Zack took off with quite a number of winning prizes too. Taylor won too, but I forgot what she came away with.

There were marshmallow treats going out, little peeps, adorable anklets and I think everyone truly enjoyed watching the kids take it all in.

Greg and Pat have a dive planned for Hoodsport coming up this weekend and Morrie is planning on an Advanced Class in Hoodsport, April 7th, 8th and 9th.

Mike from Diver's Den brought some merchandise from the Dive Shop to show the club.

He brought in the "Weezle Wear". We call them Fluffy's. You wear these garments under you dry suit, or you can wear them at other times just to keep yourself toasty and warm. He also brought some cool looking long jackets that come down past your knees,comes with an attached hood. Looks like these will definitely keep the wind off of you and keep you warm when you are out of the water and waiting for your next dive. You really have to make sure to keep your body temperature warm between dives, it will make your next dive more enjoyable.

Morrie has had the weezle garment for a while now and informs us all, he stays very warm when diving the cold waters.

I have purchased the weasel wear and will soon try out for the first time here soon probably at the "Infamous" Wohink Lake. We will see how warm it keeps me.

Mike will be teaching a dry suit class next week; Friday, March 31st over at Wohink Lake and Jerry will be helping out with the class if I remember correctly. I might go over too and try out my new weasel wear!

I also wanted everyone in the Dive Club to know that the expenses that the club incurs for just normal expenses that come with running behind the scenes paper work, web site hosting fee, photobucket fee( stores my pics) etc, I do not ask for reimbursment from the dive club; However I do get reimbursement from Diver's Den for my air fills and I appreciate that gesture from Mike. Thank you Mike.

At the next club meeting, April 27th, a number of us will not be attending. We have a Dive Trip planned for Little Cayman. I will not be able to put out a reminder, so after this blog is viewed, please mark down on your calender the date of the next Dive Club meeting, April 27, 2006 @ 7:00 pm Round Table Pizza.

Just wanted to say "Thank You" to all who attended our Jan 26, 2006 club meeting.

What a wonderful group of club members we have. We all had a wonderful time and Officers for 2006 were appointed for the year.

Jim Rogers never lets a meeting go by without his basket full of prizes. He seems to have a wide variety of interesting prizes in that basket of his. Everyone was quite pleased with what they had won with their winning tickets. Jim thank you so much for your time and effort that it takes to put your prize selection together.

Jim also brought to the meeting his video of the Channel Island Dive trip. This dive trip to the Channel Islands was in October. You had some great footage Jim! Looked like you all had a whole lot of fun. Thanks for bringing the video in.

The next trip to the Channel Islands is planned for October 2006. I think if I remember correctly, it is for diving October 16th, 17th, 18th. For more information on this dive trip, please contact Mike Ferris @ Diver's Den #541-673-3710.

We had non-stop laughter through the club meeting. Everyone was in a terrific mood! I love seeing that.

Mike Ferris addressed the group with ideas about the group getting together socially and just having good time. At several occasions, the group have made the social scene at 7 Feathers in Canyonville. They have some great shows and after the show ends the dance floor opens up and we close the place down around 1:00 am. We have a great time.

So if any of you have any ideas of what fun you might suggest, please do.

Do any of you need to order some Club Shirts? If so, please attend the next club meeting and I will bring some order forms for you.

We have about 5 shirts on order so far. We however need a minimum order of 12 for placing the order *if want to have our silk screened dive logo on front and back of shirt.

We can place orders of 1 but you will only get embroidered in small red letters, "Douglas County Diver's on the front lapel of your shirt. The silk screening process takes more to set-up, so that is why the minimum order of 12.

Douglas County Diver's!

Do you have any orders to place for the Douglas County Dive Shirts?

To have the silk screening - Dive Club logo on back of shirts, we will need a minimum order of 12.

We place our orders with Prints Charming downtown on Main street, right across from the Diver's Den. If you have any questions or would like to view shirts, just ask for Tammy. I will leave an order form with Tammy and she will have in our club file there. I will get the form to her by Monday, November 28th.

However individual orders ( one piece orders ) can be placed, but the only option here is ( front embroidered " Douglas County Divers" and small dive flag on front of shirt - The set up for this is not time consuming so there is no minimum order needed for those shirts.

If you do have a order to place and you are not able to make it to the club meeting on Wednesday, November 30, 2005 7:00 pm - Round Table Pizza, you can drop off at Diver's Den.

If Diver's Den is closed, Mike has a mail slot opening on his front door. Just toss through there.

Advanced Class - November 18th, 19th, 20th

If any of you are interested in taking this Advanced Class, Morrie LLoyd has this class scheduled for November 18th, 19th and 20th.

This class will be in Hoodsport, Washington. The plan is to leave on Friday, November 18th and travel up to Washington. It usually takes around 6 or 7 hours to get there. I might be off on the hours; depending on your stops along the way.

The cost of the class $150.00. Books run $35.00.

Morrie will be holding class the night before, November 17th @ Diver's Den and will go over the Knowledge Reviews etc. before the dive trip.

Diving in the Hood Canal has all the benefits of open ocean diving, but in a fairly controlled environment ( low current, no surge, and diving from the shore.)

We are able to see some great wildlife including wolf eels, octopus, and maybe a dog shark and a wide variety of nudibranches and plant life.

There is something to offer everyone.

Visibility this time of year can be excellent.

Next Club Meeting - Wednesday, Nov 30, 2005

Our next Club Meeting will be on Wednesday, November 30, 2005 @ Round Table Pizza 7:00 pm.

Normally our meetings are on every 4th Thursday of each month, but Thanksgiving falls on that day, so unless you all want to have your Turkey dinner at a pizza parlor (NOT!) we will see you Wednesday, November 30, 2005.

As for our December Club Meeting, we also might have a dilemma there too. It falls on December 22nd which is very close to Christmas, and as always everyone is usually quite busy around the holidays. So we should address that issue at the November meeting.

Channel Island Dive Trip - October 16th, 17th, 18th

The Channel Island Dive trip sponsored by Diver's Den departure date is coming up soon.

This is a 3 Day Dive Trip : All inclusive: Dives, Meals & Lodging planned for October 16th, 17th, and 18th. The diver's are to board the Truth Aquatics , a 65 ft. Live-aboard on October 15, 2005.

There are a few openings left for this dive trip; if any of you are interested in going or know of anyone who might like to dive for Lobster, please have them call Mike @ Diver's Den #673-3710 or #643-5710 for their space.

There will be T-Shirt order forms at the Douglas County Diver's next club meeting on October 27, 2005.

I have dropped some order forms off at Diver's Den; if any of you would like to stop by and pick one up.

I will be placing the order with Prints Charming. They are located on Main street across from Diver's Den. There needs to be a minimum order of 12. The silk screening process for the Douglas County Diver's Logo takes a bit of set up, so that's why the minimum order of 12.

They can however embroider on the front of shirt a small "Douglas County Diver's" and small dive flag with no restrictions on amount of order.

I would like to place our order with Prints Charming by November 24, 2005. This gives the club members the time to drop off forms at the next two club meetings.

Altitude Dive - Clear Lake -Sept 24, 2005

Mike Ferris from Diver's Den is scheduling a Altitude Class for Clear Lake this weekend.

He has tentatively two people ready to take the class and would like to know if there are more people interested in taking the class too.

This might be the last chance for diving this lake this fall for the lake can get pretty cold very soon.

So don't miss the chance, call and schedule for your Altitude Class. The lake is a gorgeous lake to dive and the experience will leave you breathless ( yes maybe for the coldest experience, yet the beauty of the lake over takes you.) If you need more info on the Altitude Class, please call Diver's Den @ #673-3710.

Morrie Lloyd took a group of students for their Altitude Class last weekend and heard they all had a great time.
Morrie loves it when all are so enthusiastic and this really makes the dives so much fun to teach and to have everyone in such good spirits. Well gee, maybe Morrie just makes that comes true because he is just to good at what he does (hee, hee and a heh, heh ) - sorry Morrie just had to put that one in). Just thought I would spice up the article for some interest.

This is the official last day of summer! Oh that really doesn't sound good at all. I do however love the month of October coming up fast. The cool but sunny days are wonderful.

A Craw Daddy Dive - Where? The James Wood Boat Ramp.
This event is a Dive and a Pot Luck. Please bring a side dish and your own beverages and your dinner plates and utensils.

A crab pot and burner is needed too. Last year Doug and Diane brought theirs. Can someone bring theirs this year. Other wise no eating craw daddies for ya!

Please arrive at the dive site by 5:00 pm - If you have difficulty finding the site, please call Jerry @ 643-6654 or Rod @ 670-1711.
I don't have the exact directions to get there, but its out toward Tyee in Umpqua- most of your have been there a number of times. You can also call Mike at Diver's Den on Tuesday or Wednesday to get the exact directions!
